It reimagines the Charleston home experience—a new city twist on form and function and a breath of fresh air amid all the historic homes for which Charleston is famous.

Current owner Karen Baldwin is a design consultant who worked with local artisans to create a space that exhibits and feels like an art gallery. Here, the eye wanders, the senses are stimulated and the soul is nurtured.

Tess Thomas painted a poem on the striking free-form staircase that doubles as a work of art. Eric Doran crafted the custom metal art, including the living room’s round metal light fixture, the gate entrance and forged the outdoor light fixture (a design by Baldwin). Woodworker Spiro Skartsiounis built the sculptural solid oak kitchen island and cabinets, bathroom cabinets, custom closets and bedroom built-ins.

People may be surprised by contemporary Hampton House, but everyone Charleston is a great southern city for walking. Hoertdoerfer, Baldwin, Doran and Skartsiounis just gave strollers something new with which to marvel.

I’m the über curious type. I’ve photographed Stockholm’s chromatic doors, been ripped off in Athens, and survived an overnight stay in the real Friday the 13th cabin (thankfully on Thursday the 12th). Rustic isn’t my first choice but I promise to share a variety of curiosities with you—as I did for Robb Report, Town & Country, Haute Living, Veranda, Uptown and Luxury magazine readers.
